Export obj in Maya 2011

I found myself searching for a way to export .obj files from Maya 2011 this week and found very little information regarding the subject. It turns out the functionality is inbuilt but just hidden away!

Maya 2011 is virtually brand new but I guessed plugins from older versions would still be compatible so I started searching for any and all plugins I could to export .obj files. Suprisingly I couldn't find any, and I couldn't remember how I'd managed to export .obj files from Maya 8.5 (which is what I was using prior to my recent upgrade).

I eventually came across a forum post which then made me realise why there are no plugins to be found on the internet. The functionality is built in to Maya, but disabled by default!

It then took me a few searches through the Maya help documentation to actually find the Plugin Manager but once I did I turned on the objexport.ml plugin and voila! I can export my models in .obj format now.

In case anyone else is searching for the same information I've dropped in a few shots of where you need to go to enable the .obj exporter. This is using Maya 2011 but I believe the same plugin exists in most previous versions of Maya and should be in the same place in the menus:

Load up the Plugin Manager (Maya 2011) Load up the Plugin Manager (Maya 2011)
